The Hague is favourite weekend getaway

A year after the NS launched its hotel and train package deals on Weekendjeweg.nl, it appears that The Hague is by far the most popular weekend getaway by train in the Netherlands.

The NS and the hotel booking site Weekendjeweg.nl joined forces in January 2011 and the NS began offering hotel and train package deals. The attractively priced product, consisting of one or more nights at a hotel and roundtrip train tickets on the NS, has proven to be a hit among customers given the dozens of bookings each day.

The Hague most popular

In 2011 the NS hotel and train package deals for The Hague represented almost 30% of total bookings for the city. There was even a 22% increase in bookings compared to 2010, according to data from Weekendjeweg.nl. Other popular cities for weekend getaways were Maastricht and Groningen.  

Car-free visit

Research by Weekendjeweg.nl shows that customers booking the weekend getaways are increasingly leaving their cars parked and taking the train to visit a city. Almost 1 out of 5 hotel guests travel by train to avoid traffic and parking fees and most of the hotels participating in the deal are located close to train stations.
