Plans for city in Economische Visie

Published: 16 January 2012 Modified: 23 February 2012

The Municipality of The Hague wants to further boost employment in the city. The goal is to create an additional 15,000 jobs by 2020. The plans are outlined in the Economische Visie 2012 programme presented by The Hague Municipal Executive.

The Hague Municipal Council earlier passed the plan ‘De Kracht van Kwaliteit - Economische Visie Den Haag’ (‘The Power of Quality – Economic Vision for The Hague’). The plan describes the strategy for developing the city’s economy for the long term. The recently-presented programme further elaborates this strategy.

According to Deputy Mayor Henk Kool (Social Affairs, Employment and Economy), ‘Despite the economic crisis The Hague needs be as attractive as possible to new and existing companies. This means that businesses and organisations must literally and figuratively have the space to do business. Only then can companies grow and hire additional staff.’

The Economische Visie 2012 programme stipulates seven priorities:

  • Attracting international companies and organisations
  • Promoting the innovative cluster of Security
  • Attracting people working in the knowledge economy
  • More economic development in the neighbourhoods
  • Increasing spending in Centrum and Scheveningen
  • Attracting conferences
  • Making the economy more sustainable

The municipality will work together with schools and employers on a separate plan for the specific topic of creating a link between education and the labour market. This plan will be presented in the Spring.

Additional investments will be made in the coming years in core economic areas such as the city centre, Central Station and Beatrixkwartier. These are top locations for international (head) offices. In addition the International Zone is an attractive area with a high concentration of international organisations. Together with property owners and businesses in the city, the municipality aims to maintain, and where possible reinforce, the quality and appearance of these core areas.
