The number of cyclists in The Hague is growing steadily. The Municipality of The Hague, the NS and ProRail project that some 11,400 parking spots for bikes will be needed around The Hague’s Central Station by 2020.
At present there is room for approximately 5,100 parking spots for bikes at the Central Station. Plans call for the number of spots to be more than doubled (10,050) by 2020.
Most of the demand for bicycle lock-ups in the city can be found in The Hague’s city centre, at the train stations and at the larger bus and tram stops. Demand is expected to increase in the coming eight years mainly due to a rise in the number of train passengers and passengers travelling to Rotterdam on the Erasmuslijn.
The municipality has plans to create extra parking for 800 bicycles in the giant lock-up on the Rijnstraat by Central Station, providing a total of 3,550 spaces. A permanent location will be created for 1,500 bicycle parking spots on the eastern side of the station, possibly under the Prins Bernardviaduct. The area around the Koningin Julianaplein will be examined for the creation of a space which can accommodate at least 5,000 bikes.
