Redesign of Spui starts 4 January
Published: 04 January 2010 Modified: 15 November 2010
Since 20 November 2009 the Spui in The Hague’s city centre has been car-free. The Spui will now get a complete makeover and will be made more attractive for pedestrians, cyclists and public transportation. On 4 January 2010 work began on the project to redesign the Spui. The project should be completed by the end of October 2010.
The Spui will be redesigned in its entirety and repaved with red bricks. At the same time a new combination tram/bus stop will be placed on the Spui by the former Asta club.
What will change?
Redesign:
- The Spui
will be made more attractive for pedestrians, cyclists and public transportation. Trams and buses will drive on the tram tracks, freeing up more space for pedestrians and cyclists.
- More space will be created for outdoor cafes.
- The temporary stop on the Spui by the Filmhuis will cease to exist. The stops on the Spui between the Spuistraat and Grote Marktstraat and on the Kalvermarkt will remain.
Planning
The project will be carried out in phases during which portions of the Spui will be temporarily closed to local traffic. Homes, shops and offices will remain accessible during the project for visitors to the city centre as well as suppliers. Detour routes will be indicated for local traffic and for store suppliers.
Public transportation
As of Monday, 4 January 2010 the tram/bus stop ‘Centrum’ will no longer exist for Bus 22 and 24 and Tram 1 and 16. Bus 22 and 24 will ride via the Korte Voorhout to Central Station with an extra stop at Buitenhof. The stops Centrum, Spui-Stadhuis and Nieuwe Haven will be eliminated for these bus routes in both directions. Tram 1 and 16 will stop at Spui/Stadhuis after Kneuterdijk. Once the project is complete at the end of October 2010, the tram stop by City Hall will disappear.
